Where Can You Truly Be Honest?

Where Can You Truly Be Honest?

Last week, I shared an interview I listened too with Ronna Detrick(Renegade Conversations) and Jamie Wilson(Feminine Mojo).  Ronna mentioned something that I couldn’t have agreed with more, and which speaks to the foundation of what Explore Truth is all about.

She stated:

“We have to have spaces, whether those are in therapy, relationships, journaling, anywhere, where we don’t edit, and we don’t censor…”

She went on to share in further detail why this was important, and how each of these methods helped strengthen her ability to voice questions concerning her faith, work, and personal life(Very rough paraphrase.)

And yes, I agree, we do need these spaces, whether  through media, online/offline spaces, and whatever allows for the individual to be challenged intellectually, spiritually, and existentially. A place that confronts our apathetic assumptions, tradition and dogma; loosening them up with dialog and the art of listening to the perspective of others.  And maybe somewhere along the way, we grow and become better people. Wiser people.  And in the end, take on the practical, and gritty work of making the world better. {I also talk about it here and here.}

As for me…building, being a part of, and helping to promote these types of spaces, is at the core of what I write about here, and surround the ideas and activities I am dedicated to.

So maybe you can help me BRAINSTORM on some other ways, or environments that allow people to:

  • get real, and honest about themselves
  • really express some of the deeper doubts, thoughts, and experiences as they relate to ultimate Truth(life, meaning, personal expressiosn of spirituality, the human condition, etc.)
  • become inspired to their true creativity, and more empowered with the courage and skills to do work they love.
  • Enter into meaningful conversations with people who may think differently on a variety of issues.

Some examples:

  • Personal development workshops/programs
  • Poetry/spoken word events
  • Small group conversations
  • Therapy
  • Reading, and media(film/music,etc.)
  • Journal-ling
  • Book clubs (Lupe Fiasco just started an online book club.  When I finally get consistent about posting here, I, along with some friends may begin one as well ;-)
  • Online Communities: (i.e relevant blogs/communities. Soul Pancake is a great example of a growing community dedicated to giving people a place to wrestle with life’s questions.)

Any others?  I’d like to hear from you.  What examples of safe, open minded “spaces” can you imagine, or have you experienced? Pros/Cons?  Is there anything to consider?

Share any experiences you’ve had with the above mentioned ways people explore the truth/Truth for themselves.
