The Silent Killer

I tried to focus on the words below the multicolored display chart of male and female internal organs.  The nurse was strapping my let arm into a blood pressure cuff, and in minutes my fate would be pronounced.  If it was anything like the last two blood pressure readings I knew the diagnosis would come with sharply raised eyebrows, mixed with furrowed brows.  But on January 4, 2010 I did get that, and much more.  My Blood Pressure reading on that check up was the highest I’d ever seen.

So I guess the deep concentrated breathing and focused chart reading didn’t work.  I left the doctors office more committed than ever to do something about this.  From what everyone tells me, this is a matter of life or death.  And I agree.  They don’t call high blood pressure the silent killer for nothing.  So in the past year  since I’ve been aware of this situation, I’ve aimed to eat healthier and exercise more.  This effort has been met half halfheartedly at times, but also with some measure of success.

For those who read about my attempt at P90X, I was able to somewhat consistently follow a pretty intense exercise routine, which resulted in 10 pounds of weight loss, and although the 90 day p90x challenge ended a couple weeks prematurely, I promised to do it again.  I have not.  With the recent Blood Pressure news, and the transition into the new year, a sense of clean slates, ripe with possibilities, have motivated this 30-year-old still pumping heart into re-evaluating his health, and eating habits in some fairly somber and frank terms.

So What is High Blood Pressure?

High Blood pressure is where ones systolic pressure is 140 or above, or your diastolic pressure reaches 90 or above.  That’s the short version, and I definitely qualify.  Based on statistics I have what studies show to be the leading cause of death overall in African-Americans, because of its link with heart attacks and strokes.

Yes, serious, I know.  Why African-Americans are more prone to develop High Blood Pressure will have to be tackled on another day.  Today my focus is on how people deal with this issue in the healthiest way possible.  How do I avoid the prescription drugs being freely offered to me, and still aggressively lower my blood pressure?

Controlling High Blood Pressure..Naturally

Here are a few basic things I’ve uncovered regarding what can be done to lower one’s blood pressure.

  1. Lose weight
  2. Regular Exercise
  3. Eating a healthy diet
  4. Reducing Salt
  5. Watching alcohol consumption
  6. Not smoking
  7. Watch caffeine intake
  8. Regularly monitor your pressure

I imagine that what I am embarking on, will be a journey of lifestyle changes that will be permanent rather than temporary quick fixes.  For this reason, I will be spending considerable time and attention regarding this aspect of my life this year. Considering this is not my primary focus on this blog, I’ll try not to let it overpower the other aspects to living a more truthful life.  I’ll get into a bit more detail on how I plan to personally implement some of the recommendations listed above(particularly 1-3) in a follow up post, and continue to share how I’m doing on this blog.  I’ve been educating myself and hope to share what I’ve discovered shortly.  However, in the meantime, I’m walking/running each day for 30 minutes, increasing water intake, have lowered my salt intake to below 1500 mg a day, eating more fruits and vegetables, but feel that this is just the beginning.

    Veron, I will be on this journey with you. I definitely need to get mine under control. It's a true challenge. Prayer for strength and good stewardship of diet is indeed needed.

    Good to know I'm not alone! Feel free to keep me posted on how things are going. I've been eating raw foods throughout the month of February. Feel good, but just checked pressure, and its fluctuating. I've been checking once per week, so I'm going to get a BP monitor and begin checking everyday. But I'm determined to figure this out naturally if possible.

  • That first one can be really tough. I know someone who just cannot seem to get the weight off.

    I think it's especially important for folks who have kids to watch what their children eat because people are becoming overweight at younger and younger ages...

    You're definitely right about making those health decisions early with your kids. I don't have any kids yet, but all of this is really allowing me to see how important starting early really can be!

I believe that health & spirituality & faith are intertwined. Let us not forget that the Bible talks about our bodies are a temple of God, when we do not live the healthiest we can be we are short changing God. What do I mean by this by compromising our health, we are unable to serve God to our fullest potential, the potential that He gave us. Granted God understands, and we can still serve God even when our health declines, but think how much more we can serve Him. In addition to that aspect, we compromise our spirituality, because being in tune with exploring truth, learning and growing requires all of our senses. Compromising our health compromises our senses, and does not fully enable our brains to do all that it can do when we are not at our prime. I am not an eloquent writer or speaker like yourself, and may not know exactly how to put my ideas down on paper, but our spiritual journey & faith encompasses our health. I believe Jesus is the truth, and the Bible asks us to "love the Lord with all our heart, with all our minds" with all that we are, we love Him best when all that we are is trying to be in sync with Him including being as healthy as possible. It is all part of our spiritual journey, to find out the truth about what is keeping us from growing closer to God, from what is keeping us from not only answering life's big questions, but walking in what we learn. I encourage you to continue talking about it (of course you don't want to over do it I suppose so we don't get bored with the topic), because in seeing your changes, we see what is possible in our own struggles, and what it takes to make those changes. You know I am looking at the quote on your blog "and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free," contrary to what people believe being healthy sets you free, not eating & doing whatever you like.   • Very good points Tania! Health and Spirituality are more intertwined than I've realized. I guess I just didn't want to turn this into a health and wellness blog, but...
    hmmm... I do see the practical connection between my health(alertness, memory, energy level, mental and physical ability), to the fact that this is the same medium needed to intellectually understand truths, and ultimately spiritually discern Truth.

    Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and for your encouragement in not marginalizing the centrality and interconnection of health to everything else(you expressed it quite eloquently I might add).

    All aspects to the spiritual journey, as you mentioned, are playing a current role in my life as we speak..I can get into that another time!

    And just to add, not in direct response to anything you said really...but since I haven't discussed my views on Jesus much(yet) on this site...I am fascinated with the person, story, and teachings of Jesus. I believe Jesus to be who he claimed to be. A large part of what's motivated me to begin blogging, is to better grapple with the full meaning of what this mean to me, and for today's world, while confronting where religious tradition may cloud that understanding, or even at times subvert or pacify it. And of course the topic of Jesus is connected to mans origin..found in Genesis, and all of Life's big questions...

    I hope to never feel intimidated by any traditional thinking, that I stop short of an open mind, and uninhibited exploration...This of course, opens me to the journies of others, in all their contrast.
